Taking Your New Dog, Especially A Puppy,
To a Public Place
Right Now Is Not The Best Idea.
Keep In Mind, They're Already Overwhelmed.
If They're A Baby, They've Been Taken From Their Mother and Siblings,
Probably Recently Weened And Easily Overstimulated.
If You Chose An Adult Dog Either From A Family Or The Shelter,
Their Entire World Is Being Turned Upside Down.
Naturally They'll Be A Bit Anxious.
Try And I,magine What It Would Feel Like To Be Ripped From Your
Mother Or The Place You've Called Home By Strangers And
Taken To Some Other Foreign Location That doesn't Smell Or Look
At All Familiar and Then There's all This Noise & People Around.
Whoa!!

It's A Great Idea To Pick Up Your New Dog With Their Leash In The Car.
Also, Put Their Dog Bed
Or Blanket In The Car For Them To Sit On.
It Will Be Comfortable And A Great Way To Begin Introducing
Them To Their New Home & Family.
When You Arrive Home, Before Getting Out Of The Car,
Place The Leash Around Your Dog's Neck By Connecting The Clasp
To A Part Of The Leash And Placing It Around Your Dog's Neck Loosly, But
Not To where They can Wiggle Out Of It
((you didn't buy a dog collar yet; you want to be sure it's the right size).
Don't Drag Your
New Dog Out Of The car!!! Gently Coax Them. Encourage Them.
Be Patient. Let Them Come Out On Their Own. They're Scared.
If Your New Dog Won't Get Out Of The Car Or It's A Puppy,
Gently Lift Them Out.

Once Your New Dog Is Out Of The Car, Potty Training Begins
So, Take Them Over To The Grass
Or Wherever You Want Them To "Do Their Thing"
And In Your Most Enthusiastic Voice Say:
"Go Potty Outside" Or Something Like That.
Repeat This A Few Times Until They Go.
Chances Are Very Good Your New Dog Needs To Go Potty.
Be Patient. Let Them Sniff Around. It May Take 5 or 10 Minutes. It's O.k.
When Your New Dog
Has Done "Their Thing", Praise, Praise, Praise
(good girl/boy, good potty outside)
And Pet Them Very Gently With The Biggest, Happiest Smile You've Ever Had.
Dogs Live To Please Humans. They Live To See Us Smile.
Feel The Joy That They Did What You Want.
Your Dog Will Lap It Up.
If You Decided On A Dog Who Isn't Fully Vaccinated (series of shots),
Especially Against Parvo
(it can live In the grass, dirt, etc. for many years),
Do Not Take Them Around Your Neighborhood, To A Park Or
Any Other Public Area Until They Are fully vaccinated.
It's Tragic To See A Dog Succumb To Parvo.

If Your New Dog Is Completely Up-To-Date With Vaccinations,
It's A Terrific Idea To Take Them On A Short Walk Around The Neighborhood.
This Allows Them To Get A Little Familiar With The Smells, Sounds,
And Layout Of Their New Territory.
This Can Help To Decrease Anxiety Tremendously.
It Also Allows You To Let Them Know That You, The Human, Are Their
New Pack Leader/The Boss.
If Your New Dog Hasn't Been Leash Trained, You'll Know Right Away.
Don't Jerk Your Dog Back. This Creates Fear And Distrust.
This Can Seriously Injure Your Dog.
You Want Your Dog To Respect You Not Fear You.
Instead, Gently Correct Your New Family Member.
When Your Dog Starts To Pull On The Leash, Simply Stop--Immediately.
This Makes Your Dog Stop And Stop Pulling.
It's Best To Have Your Dog Right Next To You On The Leash.
Gently Handle Your Dog. Be Patient.
If You Have To Stop 20 Times Around The Block. Do It.
Remember, This Is a Whole New Life For Your Dog And They're A Bit Nervous.
Be The Gentle & Confident Pack Leader. Your Dog Will Follow You Everywhere.
When It's Time To Go Into The House, Leave Your Dog On The Leash
And Show Them Around.
This way If There's A Space That's Off Limits, You Have Under Control.
This Also Helps Reinforce Your Pack Leader Status.
If You Have A Puppy, Watch Them Every Second.
It's Also Best To Limit The Area You Allow Them To See & Be In.
Baby Gates Are Perfect For Blocking Off Areas & Rooms.
Be Gently. Especially With This Introduction.
Remember, They're Overwhelmed With The Car Ride, The New Territory
& The Living Room.

Next, Take Them To The Backyard (be sure any holes in the fence are closed up).
Take The Lease Off So They Can Thoroughly Investigage Their New Area.
Encourage Them To "Go Potty Outside." They Usually Will.
Watch Them Like A Hawk And When They've Done Their Business,
Praise, Praise, Praise.
This Is Twice Now They've Done What You Want.
Acknowledget It. It's A Big Deal.
Go Back Into The House & Show Them Where Their Water Dish Is Located.
You May Have To Dip Your Fingers Into The Dish And Put It Up To Their
Nose So They Know Exactly What This Dish Does For Them.
When They Drink, Praise, Praise, Praise.
_____________________________________________
Next, Show Them Where They're Going To Sleep.
Don't Force Them. Show Them.
If It's A Kennel (which they may have never seen before)
It Could Be Really Scary. Be Gentle. Be Patient.
After All This, It's Usually Time to Go Back Outside For Another
Potty Session. Especially For The Puppies.
When They Go, Praise, Praise, Praise.
Some Dogs May Want To Take A Nap At This Time.
Put The Blanket Or Bed They Rode Home On Where You Want Them To Park.
Have The Napping/Sleeping Area Near Where The Family Will Be.
Dogs Are Pack Animals And Need To Be Near The Pack.
It's Instinct. It's Survival.
_____________________________________________
Don't Leave Your Dog Alone. This Is A Critical Adjustment Time.
They Are Learning To Trust You, Their Human, To Show Them The Way.
When They Wake Up, No Matter What Their Age,
Take Them Outside Immediately To Go Potty. This Begins The
Outlining Of The House Rules & Routine That Help Your Dog To
Become A Responsible Family Member.
On Your Way Outside And When You Get There, Repeat Your Mantra,
"Go Potty Outside" Or Whatever Phrase You Choose.
whatever You Say, Be Sure You Say Exactly The Same Thing Every Time.
Also, Be Sure All Other Family Members Are Saying The Same Thing Too.
Patience, Consistency, Compassion, Understanding, Love & Training Help You
Have A Canine Family Member That Brings Joy Forever.
